This month and in February, the contributions of Marquis de Lafayette to the American Revolution will be commemorated.

The first will be a presentation Sunday by Hank Parfitt at the Halifax County Ag Center Auditorium and then on February 27 with a reenactor taking the steps Lafayette did on his American farewell tour.

The Sunday event will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the auditorium at 359 Ferrell Lane in Halifax and is hosted by the Halifax County 250th Commission, Friends of Historic Halifax, and the Historic Halifax Restoration Association.

The reception begins at 3 p.m. and Parfitt’s presentation — Lafayette: His Life, Contributions, and his Farewell Tour — begins at 3:30 p.m.

Lafayette came to America and supported the cause for American independence during the Revolutionary War, serving under George Washington.

He was an outspoken advocate of religious toleration and the abolition of the slave trade.

In France, Thomas Jefferson helped him draft the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen which was adopted by the French Assembly after some revisions.

On February 27, 2025 a reenactment of Lafayette's visit to Halifax will begin at 5 p.m. as a reenactor arrives from the Roanoke River and welcomed at Eagle Tavern by William R. Davie’s son. Town’s people will then escort him to the Hen and the Hog for a dinner where the 13 original toasts will be given in a private event.

A reenactor will arrive from the Roanoke River at 5:00 pm and be welcomed at the Eagle Tavern by the son of W.R. Davie. Town's people will then escort him to the Hen and Hog Restaurant for dinner.

The next day the reenactor will go to Enfield and be greeted at The Cellars.
