This morning before 1 Deputy J. Velez and narcotics Sergeant K. Taylor were patrolling the area of Highway 158 near Highway 48 when they noticed a vehicle with an obstructed registration plate.
Velez conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the parking lot of a local supermarket on Roanoke Avenue. The driver was identified as Jermaine Lamont Hale, 38, and the passenger as Derrick Marquette Newell, 39. Both men are from Roanoke Rapids.
Newell got out of the vehicle and attempted to walk inside the business, disobeying commands to stop.
Velez and Taylor attempted to detain Newell and a brief struggle ensued. While Newell was resisting deputies, Hale fled on foot away from the traffic stop.

A criminal history check determined Newell was a convicted felon.
Velez arrested and charged Newell with possession of a firearm by felon and resisting a public officer.
