A Roanoke Rapids police officer was twice assaulted by a man who tried to flee following a Tuesday morning larceny.

Chief Shane Guyant said the larceny occurred at a business in the 1400 block of East Tenth Street.

Lieutenant M. Hunsucker located Gary Glen Starks in the area and the 30-year-old began to flee through yards and over fences to elude arrest, the police chief said.

Sergeant J. Spragins and Officer P. Dueitt arrived in the area and assisted in capturing Starks. While officers were trying to secure Starks in handcuffs, he attempted to flee again and struck Dueitt with a leg kick in his knee.

Starks was transported to the police department and attempted to flee again. He struck Dueitt in the groin area.

Starks was charged with misdemeanor larceny, misdemeanor possession of stolen goods, two counts of assault on a government official, and two counts of desist, delay and obstruct.

Starks remains in the Halifax County Detention Center on a $2,000 secured bond and has a Friday district court date.
