A Garysburg man who has several pending district court dates through December was charged Saturday afternoon for possession of a weapon stolen out of Portsmouth, Virginia in 2019.

Sergeant D. Harrison of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office stopped Alvin Hamlin, 45, in the Weldon area for driving on a suspended license.

Major Anzell M. Harris said Harrison could reportedly smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

During a search Harrison located a Ruger handgun which had been reported stolen from Virginia, several boxes of ammo and a Taurus handgun.

The stolen handgun was entered into NCIC on March 15, 2019 by Portsmouth police.

Harrison arrested and charged Hamlin with two counts of possession of firearm by felon, possession of a stolen firearm, two counts of carrying a concealed gun, driving while license revoked and possession of schedule VI controlled substance.

Hamlin was jailed without the opportunity for bond due to a previous charge of possession of a firearm by a felon. He has a November 14 district court date for that count along with another driving while license revoked count.

He also has a court date on November 8 and December 11 for driving while license revoked.

He has a Thursday district court date on Harrison’s charges from Saturday.
