Two Roanoke Rapids teens and one man have been charged in a drive-by shooting which left three people with non-life threatening injuries and led to a chase in which a Weldon patrol car was rammed Wednesday evening.

Each of the shooting victims from the 200 block of Washington Avenue are in stable condition, Weldon police Chief Christopher Davis said this morning. A motive has not been established, he said.

After interviewing the people detained late Wednesday evening, the police department through a Halifax County magistrate levied charges against Kyree Rasheen Walker Smith, 18, the driver; front seat passenger Jaylen Andre Woolfolk, 25; and Jah’Taevious Malek Pierce, 19, the rear seat passenger.

Police responded to a disturbance call around 6 p.m., a call that turned out to be a drive-by, Davis said.

Officer A. Dickens was in the area when the shooting occurred and was led on a high-speed chase through Halifax and Northampton counties.

The officer’s patrol cruiser was rammed on Interstate 95 but was not badly damaged, Davis said.

With assistance from the Halifax County and Northampton County sheriff’s offices as well as the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the three were apprehended.

After the investigation was completed the following charges were lodged:

Smith — Attempted first-degree murder, going armed to the terror of the people, felony fleeing to elude arrest, assault on a government official, aggressive driving, failure to stop for stop signs, center lane violation, and failure to maintain lane control.

Pierce and Woolfolk — Attempted first-degree murder and going armed to the terror of the people.

They were jailed without the opportunity for bond and have September 26 district court dates.

“I would like to thank all of the law enforcement agencies which assisted us with this incident, from the vehicle pursuit, to assistance at the crime scene, and help with the investigation itself,” Davis said. “Also the community members that reported this incident and cooperated during this investigation. This was a great example of agencies coming together with the community for a common goal. Without their help we may have not been able to apprehend the suspects that were apprehended.”

While Davis does not believe there is any further danger to the public in this area, police continue to investigate
