One man was arrested and charged Friday and another is being sought in a June 20 shootout in which an apartment window was struck when the residence was occupied.

James William, 34, was charged in the shooting and was also charged with drug counts following a subsequent search warrant, according to Major Anzell M. Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Hakeem Cotton, 35, of Weldon is also wanted.

At the time of the shooting at Spruce Court, deputies received several calls that identified the possible suspects.

The items seized and Williams. The HCSO said it did not have a photo of Cotton.

After further investigation conducted by Detective A. Holland, it was determined that Williams, also a Weldon resident, and Cotton were engaged in a shootout with each other at the housing complex.

Holland obtained warrants on Williams and Cotton for attempted murder and possession of a firearm by felon. Cotton also faces a charge of discharging a firearm into occupied property.
Investigators located Williams Friday at a residence in the 700 block of Maple Street.

While at the scene, investigators established probable cause for a search warrant for the residence, which was granted and executed.

Investigators located a firearm, narcotics, and multiple items of drug paraphernalia, which were seized.
Holland charged Williams with additional counts of felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, and possession of a firearm by felon.
Williams was served with all warrants and placed in the Halifax County Detention Center without the opportunity for bond. He has an August 7 district court date.

Cotton, as of this report, has not been located.
