The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Shane Guyant:

Brown in custody

Around 7 this morning Lieutenant D. Newsome, Sergeant S. Langley, and Master Officer K. Williams took Jonathan James Brown into custody at a residence in the city.

Brown, 36, was wanted in a May 29 sexual assault case when he was identified as the person who reportedly groped a 16-year girl on the buttocks at a business.

He is also currently awaiting an August 19 superior court date in Halifax County for first-degree murder and other related counts in the January 2021 shooting death of 36-year-old Curtis Graham.

That fatal shooting occurred on January 16 of 2021 at Windchase Apartments.

Today Brown was jailed without the opportunity for bond on charges of misdemeanor sexual battery and felony failure to register as a sex offender.

He has a June 27 district court date.

Shoplifters caught

Two men wanted in a Tuesday shoplifting in which more than $500 in merchandise was stolen were taken into custody Thursday night around 11 after they were located hiding in a locked bedroom on Taylor Street.

Master Officer D. Norfleet, Officer B. Holcomb and Sergeant J. Spragins conducted a search of the residence and Evan Paige Carroll and Matthew Scott Liverman were located.

From left, Carroll and Liverman:

They were each charged with felony larceny by removing/destroying an anti-theft device, felony conspiracy, misdemeanor larceny and misdemeanor possession of stolen goods.

Both received $5,000 secured bonds and have June 27 district court dates.

Halifax County Detention Center records show Liverman was still in custody as of this report while Carroll was not.

DWI

On Tuesday around 9:15 p.m. Norfleet was in the area of West Fifth and Vance streets when he observed a vehicle displaying a revoked license plate in front of him.

Norfleet conducted a stop and encountered Dorian Antonio Pitchford, 48, of Roanoke Rapids.

The officer detected an overwhelming odor of alcohol and investigated further.

Pitchford consented to the administration of Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, which he failed. He also registered on an alcohol screening device.

Norfleet located a semi-automatic pistol on the floorboard while getting it the vehicle out of the roadway.

Pitchford was taken into custody.

At the police department he registered a .23 breath sample.

Pitchford was taken before a magistrate and charged with DWI, carrying a concealed gun, and driving while license revoked.

He has a July 12 district court date.
