The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Captain Scott Hall:
Standoff update
Charges have been lodged against a Weldon resident involved in a Monday night standoff in the 1000 block of Elm Street.
Umel Jackson faces six counts of attempted murder, six counts of assault with a deadly weapon and six counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm.
He was scheduled for a first district court appearance today and of this report remains in the Halifax County Detention Center without the opportunity for bond.
Around 8:30 p.m. the Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force and the county’s special response team were attempting to execute a search warrant for a previous shooting that occurred at the residence when they were fired upon. The officers took cover.
During the gunfire Jackson was shielded by a female which prohibited officers from returning gunfire.
Agents and deputies attempted to engage in conversation with the suspect when additional shots were fired towards officers.
As the standoff continued, officers from Roanoke Rapids, Weldon, and the Nash County Sheriff’s Office responded to provide assistance.
Around 10:45 p.m. Jackson exited the front door of the home and walked toward officers as he was shielded by a female.
Jackson was taken into custody after a two-hour standoff without further trouble.
Chase, fentanyl counts
On Wednesday night around 10 Deputy J. Snider observed a motorcyclist driving a Honda with no registration plate on Tenth Street heading to Roanoke Avenue.
When Snider attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver, identified later as Daniel Joseph Smith, 32, looked back and accelerated.
Smith, of Roanoke Rapids, crossed over Roanoke Avenue and ran a red light.
He continued on West Tenth Street reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour before the bike sustained engine damage.
Snider took Smith into custody at Mobley Street.
After a search of Smith Snider located a folded lottery ticket containing fentanyl.
Snider arrested and charged Smith with felony flee to elude, felony possession of a schedule I controlled substance, fail to heed lights and siren, driving while license revoked, no liability insurance, not displaying registration plate, exceeding safe speed, fail to stop at red light and careless and reckless driving.
He received an $11,000 bond and a June 26 district court date.
Marijuana charges
On Wednesday morning around 3 Snider was on patrol in the area of Highway 158 and Roanoke Avenue when he observed a vehicle traveling north into Roanoke Rapids with a headlight violation.
Snider stopped the driver, identified as Jarvis Omar Macklin, 33, for the violation and could smell the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle.
A search led to the discovery of multiple plastic bags of marijuana that totaled 347 grams along with digital scales, numerous plastic baggies and rubber bands.
Macklin, of Garysburg, was arrested and charged with felony possession of a schedule VI controlled substance, possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a schedule VI controlled substance, maintain a dwelling or vehicle for the sale of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana paraphernalia and operate a motor vehicle without two headlamps.
Macklin, as of this report, remained in the detention center on a $25,000 secured bond and was scheduled for a first district court appearance today.
