The Halifax County School system has received funding to proceed with its new pre-K through 8 project at the former Eastman school site.

On Tuesday state Senator Bobby Hanig presented a check for $11,269,752 to Superintendent Eric Cunningham, the Halifax County Board of Education, and Vernon Bryant, chair of the Halifax County Board of Commissioners.

The funding came from the state’s Supplemental Need-Based Grant Funds and was matched by county commissioners last month through a $563,479 appropriation to make up for a deficit between money received through a state grant and the total cost of the building.

The school system had reported in January that during community forums Bordeaux Construction had unveiled a guaranteed maximum price of $47,534,759 with a total project cost of $52,973,051.

The school system's journey towards the project dates back to 2017.

"The securing of 100 percent funding for our new preK through 8 school project marks a monumental achievement for Halifax County Schools,” Cunningham said. “This state-of-the-art facility will provide our students with enhanced learning opportunities and serve as a testament to our community's dedication to education.”

With asbestos abatement completed and a renewed sense of purpose, “Halifax County Schools is poised to embark on the next phase of this transformative initiative,” the school system said. “The approval of matching funds signifies not just a financial endorsement but a symbol of belief in the power of education to shape Halifax County's future. With this pivotal milestone achieved, Halifax County Schools eagerly anticipates the commencement of construction and the dawn of a new era in educational excellence.”
