A 30-year-old Raleigh man was charged Monday afternoon with trafficking 7 kilos of cocaine after agents of the Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force conducted a traffic stop at a gas station in the Scotland Neck area.

Luis Flores was scheduled for a first district court appearance today in Halifax after he was jailed without the opportunity for bond.

Captain Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Flores has ties to Mexico. Asked whether he had cartel ties, Hall said the source of the cocaine and its destination remained under investigation.

The stop occurred around 3:15 p.m. after agents believed narcotics activity was taking place. Rudy, a task force canine, alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.

A hidden compartment commonly used by traffickers to conceal drugs during transport was discovered and the bricks of cocaine were found within.

The vehicle was seized and Luis Flores was arrested and charged with the following:

Trafficking in cocaine by possession

Trafficking in cocaine by transportation

Possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine

Felony possession of cocaine

Felony maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance
