A Virginia man who the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said stole two bottles of expensive alcohol from the Littleton package store crashed his vehicle after engaging a deputy in a chase Tuesday evening.

Sheriff’s office Captain Scott Hall said the events which led to the chase began when a man identified as Braxton Alexander Evans, 30, of Chester, entered the ABC store shortly before 6:15 p.m. and ran out with two bottles of liquor.

Deputy D. Bybee observed a description of the vehicle heading eastbound on Highway 158 towards Roanoke Rapids.

Bybee attempted to stop the vehicle but Evans continued driving, speeds reaching more than 90 miles per hour in a 45 zone.

Evans turned off the vehicle’s light and crashed into a ditch. He fled but was apprehended by Deputy J. Snider while hiding in the yard of a nearby residence. The stolen liquor was recovered.

Evans was charged with felony flee to elude and reckless driving with wanton disregard. Littleton police charged him with larceny.

He remains in custody at the Halifax County Detention Center and awaits a March 28 district court date.
