An Enfield man who served as a volunteer coach at Southeast Collegiate Preparatory Academy was charged with felony assault by strangulation today.

The Halifax County School System confirmed this evening that Paul Anthony Nicholson Jr., 37, was not employed by the system and served as a volunteer. He is no longer associated with the system.

Captain Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said on December 20 a report was received that a coach physically assaulted a student a few days prior.

Through a joint investigation with the school resource officer and the Criminal Investigations Division, a warrant for arrest was obtained by Detective Sergeant A.C. Wood.

Hall this evening declined to elaborate on the assault charge.

He said the student is doing well. “It’s an unfortunate situation. Our thoughts are with all involved parties.”
Nicholson was arrested and taken before a magistrate. He received a $2,500 bond and January 3 court date.
