After his appointment to the District 1 city council seat previously held by Tommy Daughtry, Curt Strickland was administered the oath of office by district Court Judge W. Rob Lewis Tuesday night.

Daughtry stepped down because he was moving out of the district.

“It feels good and I am ready,” Strickland said following the meeting, adding that the support he has received since the appointment has been overwhelming.

Strickland is the general manager of Builders FirstSource in Roanoke Rapids.

Halloween activities

City Manager Kelly Traynham said in her report that the annual trunk-or-treat event will be held at Fifth and Carolina streets by T.J. Davis from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the other at Chaloner Recreation during the same time.

The Optimist Club will have candy and games inside T.J. Davis from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. “We just want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable evening.”

Chief Shane Guyant told the council that trick-or-treating in the city will be allowed from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. “As far as the kiddos out trick-or-treating 5:30 to 8:30 will be the time.”

Guyant also referenced the three “very family-friendly events” which Traynhan had mentioned. “We are encouraging everyone to please come to those. A lot of people are going to be at the trunk-or-treat in those areas. We’ve got a couple of officers who said they are going to dress up.”
