A 50-year-old South Carolina man faces DWI and other charges following a traffic stop early Thursday, according to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

Chief Shane Guyant said Christopher N. Williams of Bethune, South Carolina was stopped after Sergeant D. Newsome observed him passing him on East Tenth Street. The officer noticed a lighting violation.

When Newsome turned around to follow the vehicle he observed Williams driving erratically including going across travel lanes.

Newsome stopped Williams at Highway 125 near Georgia Avenue.

Newsome detected the odor of alcohol and an open container was seen.

During a probable cause search of the vehicle, 26 grams of marijuana were inside.

A breath alcohol analysis was taken and Williams registered a .16 blood alcohol content — twice the state’s legal limit.

Williams was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, possession of marijuana up to .5 ounces, marijuana paraphernalia, open container, and failure to maintain lane control. Williams received a $500 bond and November 17 court date.
