Roanoke Valley law enforcement reported the following:

Roanoke Rapids Police Department

Today, according to interim Chief Gorton Williams, officers responded to 1500 Julian R. Allsbrook Highway after receiving reports of a domestic dispute shortly before 11:30.

As they headed to the area, they received reports that a shot was fired in the area.

PACE Officer E. Ellington, members of B Squad, and the criminal investigations division learned that the dispute was related to a domestic issue.

One person, identified as Bernard Lorenzo Smith, 64, of Roanoke Rapids, was still on the scene and had fired a shot that struck an unoccupied vehicle not related to the dispute. The person with whom Smith was arguing had left the scene, Williams said.

There were no injuries as a result of the gunshot or dispute.

Smith was arrested without trouble and charged with discharging a weapon in the city limits and injury to property.

He was jailed on a $4,000 secured bond and has a July 30 court date.

“I want to thank the officers for responding to the call in a timely manner and taking control of the situation,” Williams said.

Weldon Police Department

Chief Christopher Davis reported that on June 11 around 1:15 a.m., Officer A. Dickens responded to a 911 hang-up call in the 800 block of Washington Avenue.

After finishing this call, Dickens noticed people arguing in the 800 block of Elm Street.

When Dickens walked over to investigate, Davis said the officer observed a man later identified as Kenneth K. Rivers hit a woman on the left side of her head.

Dickens placed Rivers, 39, of Weldon, under arrest and a magistrate charged him with assault on a female.

Rivers has an August 9 district court date set.

Corporal S. McKimmey assisted.
