The East Carolina Council Boy Scouts of America will conduct its annual Scouting for Food, Good Turn for America food drive beginning Friday when they start distributing door hangers promoting the event.

That part of the drive will last through February 4, said Justin Kerr, Scouting for Food chair for the Lewis-Deanes District.

Kerr, an Eagle Scout and member of the district committee, said, “I felt of sense of community going out into the neighborhoods. It helped give back at a young age.”

That Angel’s Closet, Hannah’s Place and other nonprofits and churches will be helped, Kerr said, is fulfilling. “You always want to give back in your own community first where you see the work come back.”

After receiving a door hanger, the scouts encourage those receiving one to fill a bag with non-perishable food items and then place them on their front porch the following Friday for pickup on February 9 starting at 9 a.m.

“We want to thank Aldi for sponsoring this year’s food drive,” Kerr said. “The cold winter months are often a difficult time for those without access to steady food supplies and food pantries often struggle to keep up with the increased demand, this year especially as the recent hurricanes have created a greater need for more supplies.”

Added Kerr, “Thanks to the scout leaders for performing this much needed service. Scouting is all about serving others and this is a great example of what it means to be a scout and what scouting does for a community.”
