Roanoke Rapids police “have strong leads” in a shooting Monday which sent a victim who Acting Chief Gorton Williams described as an innocent bystander to the hospital for treatment.

Williams said the shooting occurred in the 200 block of Madison Street.

Members of C squad responded to the area shortly before 5:45 p.m. after receiving information a woman had been shot. The victim was taken to ECU North and is in stable condition, Williams said.

Officers and detectives processed the scene “and currently have strong leads on the suspect,” Williams said.

Investigators learned the woman was not involved and was an innocent bystander.

“Those who continue to commit senseless acts of crime in our city and Halifax County have to stop,” Williams said. “We will not stop and we are committed to working around the clock to hold those accountable for their actions against the community.”
