A 62-year-old Hollister man was charged last week with neglect of an elder adult after the conditions his 88-year-old mother were living under were confirmed to be unsafe and unhealthy, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest of Dennis Luis of Lynch Road occurred after the Halifax County Department of Social Services Adult Protective Services Division contacted the sheriff’s office about his mother’s living conditions, Lieutenant Shane Guyant said.

Guyant said an investigation by Lieutenant H. Phillips showed that both hygienic and medical care were being denied the woman, who was in the care of her son. Her son had power of attorney over his mother’s health and finances.

The victim was admitted to UNC Nash Hospital for appropriate medical care and DSS is working with hospital officials to find a safe place for her to live in the short-term.

Luis received a $1,500 bond and March 23 court date.
