Halifax County firefighters have been on the scene of a warehouse fire at Pelican Packaging since shortly after noon today.

Halifax Fire and Rescue Chief Ed Johnson said approximately 50 firefighters are on the scene doing overhaul.

Those firefighters represent Halifax, Roanoke Rapids, Weldon, Darlington, Rheasville and Enfield.

Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad, Halifax County EMS and the sheriff’s office remain on the scene, Johnson said.

Firefighters as of this report were still hitting hotspots and are investigating the initial cause, Johnson said.

Multiple Halifax County fire departments responded to Pelican Packaging outside Halifax this afternoon shortly after noon upon receiving the report of the fire.

Pete Roy, owner of the company off Highway 903, confirmed there was a fire in the back of the warehouse at the plastic recycling business.

He said there were no employees injured. “Everyone was evacuated,” he said.

He said the damages inside the warehouse were not known at the time.
