The Roanoke Rapids Fire Department responded to a call at WestRock this afternoon which ended up with three people being transported for treatment of what Chief Jason Patrick said were apparent steam burns.

The initial call came in shortly before 1:30 p.m. came in as an explosion.

However, when firefighters, EMS and rescue squad members arrived Patrick said firefighters assisted with the treatment of injured patients for apparent steam burns.

Three were transported to ECU North Hospital for treatment, Patrick said. The extent of the injuries were not immediately known.

Patrick said the cause of their injuries remains under investigation.

Roanoke Rapids police were at the scene for traffic control and support, Chief Bobby Martin said.

Calls have been placed to WestRock corporate communications as well as local mill management seeking comment. An email inquiry was also sent to WestRock corporate communications.

In addition to the fire and police departments, Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad and Halifax EMS responded to the call.
