The Roanoke Rapids Police Department is investigating two robberies which occurred Tuesday — one a common law robbery in which an arrest has been made and the other an armed robbery in which a suspect is sought.
Common law robbery
Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement at approximately 10:15 a.m., Officer D. Bybee responded to an assault in the 300 block of East Fourteenth Street.
The victim told Bybee he was walking in the area when Fredrick Johnson, 44, of Roanoke Rapids, reportedly pulled up beside him, got out and assaulted him by punching him.
Johnson then took items from the victim and left the area.
Bybee obtained warrants on Johnson and at approximately 1 p.m., Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Deputy A. Cash located him on Airbase Road.
Johnson was arrested and charged with common law robbery and assault.
He received a $5,000 bond and February 6 court date.
Armed robbery
On Tuesday at approximately 10:30 p.m., Sergeant M. Moseley responded to Fisher Auto Parts on East Tenth Street about a robbery.
The employee told Moseley after he finished unloading a truck he was approached by a man with a gun.
The suspect demanded money but when the victim told him he didn’t have any, he demanded the victim’s cell phone, which the victim handed over.
The suspect fled towards the woods on West Becker Drive.
He is described as standing about 6-feet tall. He was dressed in black and wore a black mask.
