The Weldon Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Christopher Davis:
On Sunday around midnight Corporal S. McKimmey stopped a vehicle for speeding in the area of West Third and Sycamore streets in a 25 zone.
He noticed a strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath.
During the investigation he discovered that the driver, Roscoe Leon Hawkins, 38, was impaired and also found a concealed weapon in the driver's side floorboard.
Hawkins, of RoanokeRapids, was placed under arrest and taken to a testing site. The results of the test showed he was three times over the legal blood alcohol content of .08.
He was charged with DWI and possession of a firearm by a felon.
He received a $3,500 bond and August 25 court date.

On Friday around 1:30 a.m McKimmey was dispatched to assist a Halifax County Sheriff's Office deputy on a traffic stop in the area of Third and Chestnut streets.
McKimmey spoke with Deputy G. Martin and discovered he had a possible impaired driver, who was identified as Chelsea Rochell Owens, 28, of Weldon.
She was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving while impaired.
Owens was taken to a testing site where the results showed a blood alcohol content of nearly two times the legal limit of .08.
She was taken before a magistrate and charged with DWI and driving after consuming with an open container.
She received a written promise to appear in court on August 26.
