The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a man who was found in the 1900 block of Roper Springs Road Saturday night.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall said this morning it could not yet be determined whether the discovery of the man by Lieutenant Steven Casey is related to a missing person report filed last week by the family of 22-year-old Deontre Jaquan Gatling of Weldon. “However,” Hall said, “We are investigating that possibility.”

Gatling’s family reported him missing in the early morning hours of June 11. He had last been seen leaving his residence in the 1300 block of Edwards Street in Weldon two days earlier.

Hall said it has not been determined how long the person found around 9 p.m. Saturday had been deceased or how the person died.

The person found appears to be a Black male who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gray jogging pants and black shoes.

The person was taken to a local medical facility. The medical examiner’s office in Greenville and sheriff’s office investigators are in the process of identifying the person as well as the cause of death.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s office at 252-583-8201, Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444 or by using the P3 Tips app.
