Commissioners today honored a Halifax County Sheriff’s Office corporal with a resolution of commendation for his actions which saved the life of a Medoc man in April.

Lieutenant Shane Guyant told the board during its meeting that Medoc community member Dudley Lynch Sr. brought the heroics of Corporal Casey Sherrod to his attention.

On April 13 Sherrod responded to a medical emergency in the community, Guyant said. “He arrived quite a distance before any emergency responders could get there. Corporal Sherrod began CPR on this individual and if it wasn’t for him actually performing CPR on this individual he would have passed. This man has to thank Corporal Sherrod for saving his life.”

Guyant said with all the negative publicity surrounding law enforcement, “It’s delightful to actually hear some positive news such as this. Part of the reason why we get into this job is to protect property and also people.”

Sherrod, who Guyant said has been with the sheriff’s office since 2017, “went above and beyond. He put himself in danger. There’s a lot more to this situation than what was stated in the resolution. He put himself in danger to save this gentleman’s life.”

Commissioner Linda Brewer told Guyant, “I second your statement about how nice it is to hear some of the positive feedback because too often all we are aware of is negative. I thank everybody involved with making this resolution happen.”

Commissioner Patrick Qualls told Sherrod, “I thank you for what you did and what you all do. Not all have the traits to do what y’all do. From the bottom of my heart and in the name of my family I thank y’all for what you do.”

Board Chairman Vernon Bryant thanked the corporal as well, not only for the situation that led to the resolution but for “every day putting on that badge and uniform and going out and serving the citizens of Halifax County.”

Said Sherrod: “It’s an honor to be recognized. I do enjoy serving the citizens of Halifax County. Whenever I’m in that position to do so I do it and don’t think twice about it. I do thank y’all for having me today and it really is an honor.”
