Roanoke Rapids police are investigating the shooting of a 19-year-old Rocky Mount resident which occurred late Thursday night between PNC Bank and the Little Caesar’s parking lot off Julian R. Allsbrook Highway.

Chief Bobby Martin said, according to the latest information provided to investigators, that Curnazzion Burgess was alert and speaking with hospital staff.

Burgess had been shot multiple times and was in need of medical attention when officers and members of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene shortly after 10 p.m.

Burgess was transported to Vidant North for treatment of wounds that Martin said did not appear to be life-threatening.

Police continue to investigate and encourage anyone with information to call the department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

“This is a very serious incident and those involved had no regard for anyone else that may have been traveling in the area,” Martin said. “This kind of violence is senseless and could have easily taken the life of an innocent bystander. We will continue to follow up on what information we have and any developing leads.”

Lieutenant Andy Cash, Detective Matt Brown, and sheriff’s office deputies assisted the police department.
