For the second straight week, the number of new positive COVID-19 cases has declined, the Halifax County Health Department reported today.

The health department added 78 new cases after adding 105 last week. The health department did report three new deaths related to the virus, which brings the total to 139.

“It does appear there’s a decline in the aggressiveness of the Delta variant,” health department Director Bruce Robistow said. “Our increased number of vaccinated citizens, mask-wearing, and other appropriate mitigation techniques are steering us in an overall positive direction.”

Robistow said, “With the recent development of booster eligibility and the projected ability to vaccinate 5- to 11-year-old children, I am optimistic we can get even closer to a herd immunity.”

(Additional information on the upcoming booster clinic can be found at this link)

The threshold of herd immunity, he said, “will be determined by more people getting vaccinated. I would strongly recommend anyone eligible for vaccination to please do so.”

The 6.9 percent positive number reported today gets the county closer to its target of less than 5 percent.

The 78 new positives reported today bring the total since March of last year to 7,898.

There have been 7,535 — 95.8 percent — patients who have recovered. There are 191 — 2.43 percent — active patients.
