The Halifax County Sheriff's Office has received reports where a person is identifying himself as Deputy Michael Cunningham in a jury duty scam.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall said this afternoon two people have been taken by the scam  in which the purported deputy is requesting from a couple of hundred dollars to $1,800 as payment for failure to appear in court for jury duty.

The caller tells potential victims they missed jury duty and then asks for a payment for failing to appear in court.

“Please know,” Hall said in a statement, “We do not have a Deputy Cunningham and we never seek payment through phone calls for failed jury duty appearances. Please warn your elderly loved ones and do not fall victim to this scam.”
