An additional death related to COVID-19 was reported by the Halifax County Health Department today and brings the total to 122.

The department also reported 211 new positive cases since its report last week. The total number of positive cases since March of last year stands at 6,840.

There have been 6,181 patients who have recovered — 90.98 percent — and there are 492 active cases.

“Although we are reporting 80 fewer new cases than last week, we remain in a substantial spike,” health Director Bruce Robistow said this afternoon. “We added one new death in the last week, our percent positives remain over 13 percent and I remain concerned that recent holiday activities may propel this spike into record numbers.”

Robistow said the county vaccination rates have improved slightly but he said, “With new variants on the horizon, time is of the essence to reach herd immunity to get COVID-19 and all its variants under control.”

Before the spike in cases and the Delta variant of the virus, the target for herd immunity was at 70 percent of the population.

Now, according to the health director, “Because we’ve allowed this virus to mutate to such a powerful variant, herd immunity will require 80 percent or higher. The longer we delay getting to herd immunity is similar to taking out a loan and delaying making payments. The principal will continue to rise.”
