Demolition at the former Roanoke Valley Power Facility in Weldon continued Tuesday as two smokestacks at the site came crashing downward.

Halifax County Economic Development Director Cathy Scott said Tuesday evening the site is anticipated to be part of Roanoke Valley Lumber, a $200 million sawmill which Roseburg Forest Products announced in July it plans to build in Weldon.

Scott said plans for the sawmill are on schedule.

Westmoreland Coal Company announced in 2017 it was putting the site up for sale after it amended its power supply agreement with Dominion Virginia Power and would no longer be required to operate the Weldon facility.

Discussions on the potential closing of the facility began surfacing in 2013, according to documents filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
