Total positive cases of COVID-19 since March of last year are nearing the 6,000 mark as 98 new positives were reported today by the Halifax County Health Department.

There are now 5,990 total positives since last year.

Of that 5,990 total, there have been 5,653 patients who have recovered. There are 205 active cases with at least 13 of those hospitalized, health department Director Bruce Robistow said.

There remains 116 deaths related to the virus in Halifax County.

Asked what has gone wrong as the number of positive cases increase after a sharp decline, Robistow said, “The best answer is not what we’re doing wrong, it's what we have done. We started out accepting the fact we were in a pandemic. We were eager for a vaccine and eager to get back to normal.”

When the vaccine became available “the demand and the lines to get vaccinated were extreme and then suddenly the demand all but diminished. This made it able to knock COVID-19 down but not out. It gave the virus the opportunity to mutate and come back even stronger.”

Moving forward, Robistow said, the county “needs to go to where we were when we were making progress, getting vaccinated and practicing the three Ws. Then what we need to do is follow it through, reaching herd immunity, and disallowing the virus to continue to mutate.”
