What began 15 years ago as Angel’s Closet on Thursday became the John 3:16 Center Community Resource Center in Roanoke Rapids.

With leaders of both the Roanoke Valley and Lake Gaston Regional chambers of commerce officiating, the building at the intersection of Roanoke Avenue and Highway 158 was christened with a ribbon-cutting to signify the change.

“It’s a blessing for me to be here,” said Gilbert Portela, who began Angel’s Closet 15 years ago and initially ran it out of a school building. “Ultimately we were blessed to help over 2,300 families. It couldn’t have been done without God’s help.”

When Portela saw it was time for him to step aside, eventually, Shannon McAllister, executive director of the Littleton-based John 3:16 Center stepped up.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to build on what Gilbert started,” McAllister said. “I only hope we can follow in his footsteps.”

While the ribbon-cutting was Thursday, the resource center’s official opening was today.

Donations will be accepted beginning Monday.

Essential programs, providing clothing, household goods, and food pantry to meet the needs of families in the community referred by social service agencies, churches or schools will continue at no charge to the family.

The center will serve as a community resource outlet for families with programs that include school supplies, parenting supports, and Christmas outreach as well as provide a meeting space for community and support groups.

The location will be open by appointment to referred families in need Mondays from noon to 4:30 p.m. and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The center will be open to the general public to shop Wednesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cash and cards are the accepted forms of payment.

On the first Saturday of each month, beginning in October, the center will partner with local non-profit groups to co-host a $5 bag day sale in which half of the proceeds of that day’s sales go directly to the partner group.

All proceeds from any sale of items from the location will go back into the community, supporting programs to benefit families in Halifax, Warren and Northampton counties.
