Halifax Community College will hold its 14th annual Saluting Our Local African American Heroes celebration Thursday at 10 a.m. 

The event will be held virtually this year in light of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The honorees for the 14th edition of the program are:

Tony Brown, Halifax County manager

Tony Burnette, interim emergency management coordinator for Northampton County

Maryellen Jones, artist, educator, and community volunteer

Rose Battle Lewis, Halifax County aging program coordinator

The Reverend Clarence Pender, youth pastor of End Street Baptist Church in Scotland Neck

Kesha Rooks, chief operating officer, Rural Health Group

Elder Johnny Taylor, assistant pastor at Community Church of Christ #2, on Highway 48 in Roanoke Rapids

The heroes were chosen based on their commitment and contributions to the community, unselfish devotion to others, initiative, innovation and leadership, and willingness to share time and wisdom through community service.
