Suspects in an armed robbery this afternoon were last seen fleeing toward Jackson Street Extension, according to Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty.

Hasty said in a statement the heist occurred around 2 p.m. at the New Dixie Shell on what is traditionally called the no-hundred block of Roanoke Avenue. The business is located across the street from the Roanoke Canal Museum.

Store employees told officers two men entered the business and one of them brandished a gun.

They demanded cash and employees complied.

They fled toward Jackson Street Extension.

One person wore a camo hooded sweatshirt or jacket while the other wore a red and black hooded sweatshirt or jacket. Both used the hoods to cover their faces.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department 252-533-2810 or Halifax County Crimestoppers 252-583-4444.
