A 10-year-old Hollister girl died Saturday night following what the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office described as the possible mishandling of a firearm.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall said in a statement deputies responded to Bobolink Trail around 11:30 p.m. after receiving a call a juvenile was shot.

Deputies learned the child died from the injuries she sustained.

Hall said early information indicates the shooting might have been the result of a mishandled weapon by a relative.

Hall this afternoon declined to elaborate on the matter as investigation continues.
