The Halifax County Board of Education Monday night approved Superintendent Eric Cunningham’s recommendation to continue with remote learning for the fourth nine weeks.

This means the school system will continue with virtual learning in light of the novel coronavirus from March 11 through May 21.

The school district reserves the right to bring forth another recommendation if data metrics improve, the system said in a statement.

“After carefully analyzing the data from our parents, students, staff and teachers, it is apparent that there are still deep concerns about COVID-19 and its impact on reopening for in-person instruction,” the school system said.

Halifax County Schools sent out an online survey and a phone survey for each quarter to gather stakeholder input.

Assistant Superintendent Tyrana Battle shared the results of the fourth quarter survey which showed 72 percent of respondents voted to continue with Plan C of virtual learning.

Halifax County Health Director Bruce Robistow shared information showing that the COVID-19 positivity rate of 14.7 percent is significantly higher than the 5 percent threshold.

“We will continue to work with our health department officials and monitor the data,” Cunningham said. “With the support and guidance of our health experts, we are certain we will identify the best time to fully reopen. Safety is our highest priority and requires everyone to be in alignment to protect our most precious treasures — our children.”
