Roanoke Rapids residents took advantage of the first significant snow of the winter to sled at T.J. Davis Recreation Center and build snowmen.

These are a few of the scenes from around the area this morning.

The National Weather Service said in its morning update the rest of the day will be mostly sunny and with drier air moving in much of the snow is expected to melt quickly.

It will be blustery and chilly for the rest of the day with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s and gusty winds.

Patches of black ice are possible mainly along and north of Highway 64 into Friday morning as temperatures drop into the teens and 20s.
