Two men from the Eastern Shore area of Virginia were arrested and charged after a Halifax County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant seized 5 pounds of marijuana and other drugs following a traffic stop on Interstate 95 Wednesday afternoon.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall said this afternoon it appears Lamar Maalik Byrd, 23, of Mattaponi, Virginia, and Nicholas Kyle Joseph, 23, of Painter, Virginia, were passing through the area when Lieutenant E. Carroll stopped them around 2:30 p.m. near the 173 mile marker in the northbound lane for an unsafe movement violation.

Hall said where they had been and where they were going was not immediately known.

In a statement Hall said a search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of approximately 5 pounds of marijuana, a handgun, currency, drug paraphernalia and ecstasy pills.

The men were arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and deliver MDMA, maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed weapon. 

The men received $15,000 secured bonds and February 17 court dates.
