The latest death related to the novel coronavirus brings the total number in Halifax County to 41, the health department reported today.

Data on the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services COVID-19 dashboard shows this death was from within the Roanoke Rapids area ZIP code.

It is the 21st related death to be reported from within the Roanoke Rapids area.

The breakdown of related deaths in Halifax County is as follows: 21 within the Roanoke Rapids area ZIP code; six within the Scotland Neck area ZIP code; five within the Enfield area ZIP code; three within the Weldon area ZIP code; two within the Halifax area ZIP code; two within the Littleton area ZIP code; one within the Hobgood area ZIP code; and one within the Hollister area ZIP code.

Since its last report on Friday the health department today added 87 new positive cases to its data, bringing the total cumulative number of positive cases since March to 2,350.

Data on recoveries and current cases is expected to be released Wednesday.

There continues to be a sustained increase in the trend of positive cases which the health department attributed last week to holiday gatherings, travel, cold weather, keeping gatherings inside and non-compliance with the Three W’s — handwashing, waiting 6-feet apart, and wearing a facial covering.

The health department said last week a continuation on this trajectory will result in more restrictions being set by the governor.
