Halifax County commissioners this morning selected Vernon Bryant to continue as chairman of the board.

Commissioner Rives Manning will continue to serve as vice chair.

Manning moved to name Bryant as chair and the motion was approved unanimously.

Commissioner Marcelle Smith nominated Manning as vice chair.

Bryant said this was his seventh year as chair of the board and his 11th as a commissioner. “I will always put my best foot forward in representing the board and this county.”

Manning said, “I thank my colleagues and I appreciate it and will serve to the best of my ability.”

Also this morning, in a meeting held via the GoToMeeting format due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, District Court Judge Turner Stephenson swore in the three commissioners who ran unopposed in the November election.

Those commissioners were Carolyn Johnson, Smith and Linda Brewer.

Stephenson also swore in Christie Avens, who ran unopposed for the register of deeds.
