The Halifax County Health Department today added eight new positive cases of COVID-19 to its data.

This brings the total cumulative number of positives since testing began in March to 1,996.

The health department Wednesday is expected to report data on the number of recoveries and current cases.

Today’s report continues to show a sustained increase in the number of positive cases while showing a decrease since its report Monday.

In its report on Monday the health department said the decrease in its report was reflective of minimal testing and reporting over the holiday weekend.

There have been 36 related deaths with the following breakdown: 19 within the Roanoke Rapids area ZIP code; five within the Enfield area ZIP code; four within the Scotland Neck area ZIP code; three within the Weldon area ZIP code; two within the Halifax area ZIP code; two within the Littleton area ZIP code; and one within the Hollister area ZIP code.

The health department continues to encourage residents to practice the Three Ws — handwashing; wearing a facial covering; and waiting 6-feet apart.
