No foul play is suspected in the February 14 death of a Roanoke Rapids man who collided with a Northampton County Schools activity bus, Weldon police Chief Chris Davis said.

Davis said in a statement the police department has concluded its investigation into the crash, which occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on Country Club Road near Corbitt Drive.

Leon Smith, 63, died following the head-on crash with the bus. “After further investigation it appears that Mr. Smith was headed east on Mackie Street and collided with the first Northampton County activity bus at the intersection of Country Club Road and Mackie Street,” Davis said. “Mr. Smith stopped momentarily and then proceeded north on Country Club Road where he went left of center near Corbitt Drive and collided head-on with the second Northampton County activity bus.”

Davis said Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene and died from blunt force trauma.

The police chief said there was no evidence of foul play or signs of impairment.
