Roanoke Rapids High School will be looking for a new football coach, the school system said in a statement requested by rrspin.com

The statement from Superintendent Dain Butler said, “There will be a new football coach at RRHS. Interviews will be held soon and a recommendation will be made to the board of trustees for approval.”

The statement does not give an explanation as to why coach Eric McDaniels will no longer lead the football Yellow Jackets from the sideline in the upcoming 2020 season.

The statement says, “We take seriously our responsibility to treat all employees fairly. For this reason RRGSD does not discuss personnel matters.”

What is known from sources not employed by the school system is that McDaniels was relieved of his coaching duties and it is also known he will continue to teach within the system.

McDaniels, a longtime educator, was named head football coach in 2014.

He grew up in Elizabeth City where he attended the Pasquotank County School system and graduated from Northeastern High School.

He attended Chowan College — now Chowan University — where he played football and baseball, transferred to Atlantic Christian — now Barton College — where he played baseball, and finished his last semester at Elizabeth City State University with a BS in Health and PE.

At the time of his hiring in Roanoke Rapids he had 21 years teaching and coaching experience.
