The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following drug arrests:

The narcotics division received several citizen complaints about possible drug activity at a residence in the 400 block of Elkins Drive. 

Shortly after midnight Thursday, Agent R.E. Ball went to the residence.

During the encounter with Jacob Arlen Newsome, 21, of the residence, marijuana and several items of marijuana paraphernalia was seized. 

The paraphernalia was scales, baggies, a grinder, a bong, glass containers and an electric marijuana smoking device.

Ball arrested and charged Newsome with possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver schedule VI controlled substance, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling place for a controlled substance and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Newsome received a $5,000 bond with a March 18 court date.

On Thursday shortly after 1 p.m., Agent C.A. Parker conducted a traffic stop on Highway 903 near Highway 48 for a motor vehicle violation. During the search of the vehicle crack cocaine was found.

Parker arrested and charged Adam Pearson, 26, of Waldo Street with felony possession of cocaine. 

Pearson received a $2,000 bond with a March 1 court date. 

Agents D.J. Epperson and D.K. Newsome assisted.

On Thursday shortly after 1 p.m., Ball conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Smith Church Road near Jesslyn Drive while following up on a drug complaint.

Ball arrested and charged Heather McNeil, 37, of Roanoke Rapids for possession of fentanyl. McNeil received a $1,500 bond with a March 18 court date.

On Thursday shortly before 2 p.m., Newsome and Captain A.M. Harris went to a residence on Pearson Hill Road to conduct a follow-up on a drug complaint. The complaint was that several different cars came to the residence and approached a vehicle that would be parked in the driveway, make a transaction and leave.

Two men were inside the vehicle when agents arrived. They were detained due to items inside the vehicle. A search warrant was applied for and granted.

During the search of the vehicle, four individually wrapped packages of fentanyl, crack cocaine, cocaine, marijuana, a handgun and several items of drug paraphernalia were seized which included lottery slips, digital scale with powder residue and cigars.

Newsome arrested and charged Bryan Allen, 26, of Weldon, and Marcus Winborne, 28, of Gaston for possession with intent to sell/deliver fentanyl, felony possession of cocaine, possess less than one-half ounce of marijuana, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling place for a controlled substance, possess drug paraphernalia and possess marijuana paraphernalia. Allen had an additional charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

Allen was also served with an outstanding warrant for arrest for conspire to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon inflicting serious injury and attempted robbery with dangerous weapon.

Winborne received a $12,500 bond and Allen received a $20,000 bond. Both have March 18 court dates.

Selective Traffic Enforcement Program

On February 15, Lieutenant C. Emerson Carroll of STEP stopped a vehicle on Highway 301 in Weldon for a speeding violation.

During the search, two plastic bags of marijuana containing 33 grams were seized. 

Carroll arrested and charged JayQuan Smith-Walley, 19, of New Lane, Halifax for possessing marijuana more than one-half to one and one-half ounce and possessing marijuana paraphernalia.

Smith-Walley received a North Carolina Uniform Citation for driving while license revoked and a March 23 court date for the drug violations.

Monday at approximately 12:30 p.m., Deputy M. Bishop conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Interstate 95 near mile marker 171 for a speeding violation.

During the search of the vehicle marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia was seized. 

Bishop cited Darryl Thompson, 30, of Washington, DC, for possession of marijuana less than one-half ounce and possession of paraphernalia.

Thompson received an April 28 court date.

At approximately 3:45pm, Bishop stopped a vehicle on Interstate 95 near mile marker 168 for a speeding violation.

During the search of the vehicle marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia was seized. 

Bishop cited Bernard Holmes and Bryon Faison both of South Carolina for possession of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia. Both were given April 28 court dates.

The STEP team was created last month by Sheriff Wes Tripp to educate the public on driver safety, enforce traffic laws, deter criminal activity and see a reduction in personal injury and property damage throughout the county.
