A crash this morning in the Aurelian Springs community claimed the life of an Enfield area woman, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Trooper J.T. Keeter said the crash occurred shortly before 9:45 this morning on Highway 48 about a mile south of Justice Branch Road.

Melody Gannett, 56, who perished in the crash, was driving a van in the northbound lane of Highway 48 when she went left of the centerline. Her vehicle sideswiped the empty trailer of a log truck which was traveling in the opposite lane.

Gannett’s vehicle came to rest on the roadway while the log truck came to rest in a ditch. There were no other injuries, Keeter said.

The contributing factor was driving left of the centerline, Keeter said.
