There were two special recognitions at Tuesday’s Roanoke Rapids City Council meeting.

In the first police Chief Chuck Hasty recognized officers of the quarter while Leah Brewer recognized Emily Aman and Dawn Rossi for their completion in PAWS Family.

Hasty recognized investigators Jamie Hardy and Chris Babb and officers Morgan Worrell, Elliott Johnson and Curtis Batchelor.

Hardy and Babb were recognized for their drug investigation work and for working in conjunction with the Eastern District of North Carolina United States Attorney’s Office in its Take Back North Carolina initiative.

Worrell was recognized not only for being a leading officer in drug arrests and serving papers but in her initiative, including buying her own camera for taking evidence and crime scene photos.

Batchelor is also one of the leaders in patrol drug arrests.

Johnson was recognized for his community policing efforts including providing a pizza party for a daycare group out of his own pocket.

PAWS recognition

Brewer said the completion of PAWS Family for Aman and Rossi means they know the requirements for responsible dog ownership including the law, being safe with their pets, proper care and community safety. PAWS stands for Pledge Animal Wellness and Safety.

Not present at the meeting were Andrea Ammerman and her dog Jagger and Patricia Wickers and her dog Raven.

The recognitions bestowed by Brewer came around the anniversary of Mayor Emery Doughtie in 2013 declaring October 1 as Hero Dog Elle Day.

That proclamation came as Elle was named national top dog in the 2013 American Hero Dog awards. “In honor of such a special recognition we continue to follow that path through our PAWS therapy program volunteering and our education program helping other pet families,” Brewer said. “Emily Aman and Honey and Dawn Rossi and Tikka deserve to be recognized for their completion of our program. The purpose of this initiative is to create a safe and responsible pet-friendly community."
