Paige Turner  was chosen as the Distinguished Young Woman of Roanoke Valley for 2020. 

She is a rising senior at Roanoke Rapids High School and is the daughter of Bo Turner and Angel Jean Somogyi and guardians, Michael and Adrienne Powell. 

She received $11,000 in cash scholarships Saturday night placing in the fitness, talent, interview 

and self-expression categories. 

Paige will now compete for the state title, traveling  to Greensboro in January to participate in the Distinguished Young Woman of North Carolina state program. 

There was $21,400 in cash scholarships awarded on stage Saturday during the event held at The Centre on the campus of Halifax Community College.

“It was a great evening showcasing eight young women from two schools in our community who vied for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Roanoke Valley for 2020,” said event Chair Treva Neville.

Toni Darden, Distinguished Young Woman of Roanoke Valley 2019, chose the theme Get on Your Feet for the program, which she exuded through her dancing. 

Toni is a rising freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill. 

First Runner Up was Cora Homan. 

She is a rising senior at Roanoke Rapids High School and is the daughter of Jennifer and David Boswell and Joseph Homan and Lynn Krinkie. 

She received $4,750 in cash scholarships placing in the fitness, talent, self-expression, and spirit categories.

Second Runner Up was Elizabeth Colston. She is a rising senior at Roanoke Rapids High School and is the daughter of Mike and Tammy Colston. She won $2,500 in cash scholarships placing in interview, fitness, scholastic and leadership categories.

Fitness awards were valued at $250 each and sponsored by Spartan Elite 365 Training Facility, Ben's Creek Nursery, and Enviva Pellets Northampton.

Self-expression - Makayla Mabrey, Turner and Homan. 

Self-expression awards were valued at $250 each and sponsored by Distinguished Young

Woman of Roanoke Valley Scholarship fund.

Talent - Mabrey, Turner and Homan. 

Talent awards were valued at $250 each and sponsored by Myrick's School of Dance, Given's Dance and Progressions Dance Studio.

Interview - Colston, Turner and Jenna Walker.

Interview awards were valued at $250 each and sponsored by WestRock.

Overall Interview - Mabrey

Overall Interview Award winner received a $500 cash scholarship and was sponsored by Sheriff Wes Tripp. 

Scholastic - Kaci Richardson, Colston and Walker

Scholastic Awards were valued at $250 each and sponsored by DrugCo.

Overall Scholastic - Lilly Branch

Overall Scholastic Award winner received a $500 cash scholarship sponsored by Southern Smiles Orthodontics.

Entrepreneur Award - Allyson Harden

The Young Entrepreneur award recognized a young woman for her hard work and dedication

throughout the Distinguished Young Woman program through fundraising and overall service

to the program as well as the community. The award was sponsored by Enviva Pellets Northampton.

Harden received a $500 cash scholarship. 

Spirit Award - Homan

The spirit award is a long time coveted award by participants across America. The young lady 

chosen is selected by her fellow participants and is viewed to have the attributes that a DYW

should have and is given to the one they think embodies the Distinguished Young Woman program.

The $500 Spirit scholarship was sponsored by WestRock and Drugco.

Be Your Best Self Awards - Branch and Harden

The Be Your Best Self awards are given to the young women who embody the BYBS message 

empowering young people with valuable tools to face the challenges of negative peer pressure,

drawing on their own personal experiences. Each participant submitted an essay for this

award. Each recipient won a $200 scholarship sponsored by M.J. Price Construction.

Leadership Award - Colston

The leadership award recognizes a young woman for her large array of characteristics, such

as values, character, motives, habits, traits, competencies, style, behaviors, and leadership skills throughout the program, as well as in her school and community. 

The winner received a $250 scholarship sponsored by Enviva Pellets Northampton.
