An officer was injured in a scuffle with a repeat offender Saturday morning, according to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

Lieutenant Bruce Norton is scheduled to visit an orthopedic specialist after he injured his elbow in a tousle with Khalid Frederick in the lobby of the Sleep Inn shortly after 3 a.m.

Norton and officers Duane Daniels and Gerald Morris responded to a call that a man was hollering and screaming at the clerk.

The officers, according to Captain Andy Jackson, observed Frederick with his pants down to his ankles, exposing his boxer shorts and T-shirt, continuously saying someone was beating on him.

The officers noticed that Frederick was allegedly impaired and he reportedly stated to Norton he was on cocaine.

When the officers asked him to put his clothes back on and go to his room, Frederick continued to act disorderly so officers attempted to place him under arrest. Frederick continued resisting and a scuffle broke out. During the fight Norton injured his elbow.

Both Frederick and Norton were transported to the hospital and Frederick was then jailed on $30,000 secured bond but was released later that day.

He is charged with two counts of resisting an officer, one count of trespassing, one count disorderly conduct, one count simple physical assault on an officer and one count of assault on a government official.

He has a January 20 court date.

Jackson said Frederick has been charged recently as November with altering and destroying criminal evidence when, during a disturbance in the 300 block of Washington Street, he took a police camera and allegedly deleted photos. He also has past charges of assaulting a government official and injuring personal property.
