A Weldon woman allegedly tried to exchange a comforter for a gift card by telling Walmart employees it was a gift from her mother when it had actually just been set out for a Black Friday special.

This was the only Black Friday incident reported in Roanoke Rapids, Captain Andy Jackson, of the city's police department, said this morning.

The alleged ruse by Yvette Anderson, 38, of Sycamore Street, led Officer Scott Blythe to charge her with obtaining property by false pretense. She received a $1,000 secured bond.

Jackson said Anderson explained to Walmart employees she was given the comforter set on November 22. The comforter set, however, wasn't put out until Thursday, expressly for the Black Friday sale.

“Everyone was well behaved,” Jackson said. “I had several people comment they thought Walmart did good by stretching the time out and alleviating problems.”

Blythe was one of the officers assigned to Premier Boulevard for Black Friday patrol and Jackson said the presence may have helped. “I'm sure it did. The place was packed at 11 p.m. (Thursday). I think it's better to do it early like that.”
