John White has decided to accept the mayor's seat after winning it through write-in ballots last Tuesday while also winning the town board seat he filed for in Halifax.
“After going over several scenarios with the UNC School of Government staff, and a lot of discussions on the situation with the election, I have decided to accept the mayor's seat,” White said in a message to rrspin.com Thursday night. “It just seems that would be the best decision for all involved and, hopefully, also for the town.”
White said, “I appreciate the support and patience of our citizens as we researched the options for the town board to consider. As it stands now, the new board will be sworn in at our December meeting and they will consider possible replacements for my board seat.”
The school of government, according to White, says any qualified citizen of Halifax could be appointed by the board. “I would hope we would have a person ready to be sworn in soon, hopefully by January.”
Said White: “I hope that I, and our board, are able to be an asset to Halifax, and serve our town with the honor and respect it deserves. Halifax is a great town and we will do our best to help our town be the best it can be.”
