John White is both mayor and town commissioner in Halifax, according to unofficial election returns from Tuesday.
White was not only one of five people elected to the town board, but he won the mayor's seat, collecting 18 write-in ballots to the 14 ballots cast for incumbent mayor Gerald Wright.
Halifax County Board of Elections Director Kristen Scott said the quandary is something the local board will be discussing with state election officials into what happens since White won both races. He could not be reached for immediate comment this morning.
The county board will also discuss the matter Tuesday at 11 a.m. when it meets for the canvass of ballots from Tuesday's election.
The review of write-in ballots Wednesday by the county board also determined the unofficial winners in the town board race.
They are White and Cliff Bass and write-in winners Chuck Peoples with 19 write-ins; Jeff Elks with 21 and Lee Clements with 11.
In Hobgood the review of write-in and provisional ballots determined Stella Daughtery, Julian Padgette and Hyman Leggett Jr. were the winners in the town board race. Leggett received 64 of 69 write-in ballots.
